Thermomix (TM5)

My husband spoilt me with an amazing machine – the Thermomix, which I had seen in action a few months before and was pretty amazed by all it could do. I was sceptical at first but once I saw it in action I was blown away.

So if you haven’t been exposed to a Thermomix and are wondering what it is. A Thermomix is an all-in-one kitchen appliance which cooks, blends, steams, mills, purees, whips and more…alot more!

In the few weeks we have had it, I have used it almost everyday and tried all sorts of recipes, such as making my own peanut butter (best ever!), fresh mayo, bread dough, meringues (recipe will be on blog soon) and many more.

I have just included a few general comments, observations and my experience with this fantastic machine.

Why Thermomix?

We decided to buy the Thermomix, rather than other similar product because of the great support they have in SA. If anything breaks, or you want additional bowls, etc they are very good at sorting it out. Which is very important, to me anyway. Also, there is a huge online community of recipes, not only in SA but Australia & the UK as well…which is great and so helpful. I have already downloaded and printed a whole load of recipes that I want to try and am slowly getting through them.

Is it worth it?

For me, yes. I love the machine and keep experimenting and finding new dishes, condiments, etc to make. I am a foodie, I love food, I think about food all the time, I even dream of it! So I have had so much fun and use out of it. It does make your life a little easier as you can cook a curry or stew in the machine while you get dressed, clean the kitchen or whatever else you need to do. There is no slaving over the stove…which helps alot especially during the week. Below I have included some pro’s and con’s that came to mind immediately.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Fast food preparation
  • Scale is built into the machine
  • Easy to clean, just pop it in the dishwasher
  • Great for people that do not own any other kitchen appliances
  • The recipe chip makes cooking a little easier as it automates the functions

Cons

  • The cost – it is a very expensive machine
  • If you are not careful you can over blend your food as it is super fast and it takes some getting used it
  • It takes a little bit of time getting used to where everything is in the menu

Conclusion

I think if you have been considering a Thermomix and can afford it, you should go for it as you won’t be sorry. And, if you have a baby, it is fabulous at whipping up baby food…so you will get so much use out of it. However, Thermomix is probably not for everyone, it will also depend on the food you like to eat and your food preparation likes and dislikes. It fits perfectly into my lifestyle but that’s just me 🙂 I love my machine and am very happy to have it in my kitchen.

No I don’t think so – they wouldn’t like the steak, salmon, tuna or eggs that I would present…they would be too cooked for their liking! Hehe!

    Hi there!
The Thermomix looks like a super machine!
Can it do cashew nut creams and raw veg soups too?

Hi Colleen, I have made peanut butter and almond butter so I cashew nut butter will be a breeze. I’ve never tried raw soups but you should also easily be able to make raw veg soups.

    Hi Shelly
I have just bought a Thermomix TM5. I am so escited I dont know where to begin. I made a few things ofver the weekend . mostly turned out successful. The one fail I had was the cooking of eggs on the Varoma tray. I placed my baking paper in the tray. oiled it. broke my eggs into it and then cooked as instructed. the problem was ehn I tried to lift the eggs out of the tray, the paper was soggy and attached to the eggs. So i was wondering if youve had this experience and if there is a solution or an alternate way to cook the ‘fried’ eggs. Thanks so much. I just found your blog and will be a regular visitor.

Hi Michelle, I hope you enjoy your Thermomix, they are fantastic and so versatile! It’s a fantastic tool in the cold weather as it makes delicious soup, risotto and curry! A friend of mine even uses it for the best ramen ever! To be honest, I’ve never tried a fried egg (I know I am terrible) I make poached eggs and boiled eggs often. But I found online that they suggest that you place wet wrung out baking paper into Varoma tray, then the eggs. Can’t hurt to try that. Let me know if it works 🙂

This is the best kitchen machine I’ve ever owned!!
The #1 reason I love using this machine is that I no longer have to spend time at the stove watching the pot. The temperature & time is set according to the recipe, so no searching through cookbooks either, its so simple! The other reason I like the machine is the actual prep. No more dicing, shredding, chopping, mincing, etc. This machine does it all. I literally throw in full garlic cloves, onions, & whole tomatoes & never give it a 2nd thought. That alone saves me a ton of time! It’s so easy to use and you really don’t even need to know how to cook to use it. The instructions are fool-proof. TM5 has literally changed the way I cook.
