Madikwe has to be one of my favourite places in SA…I have been many times and like to stay in different lodges each time. This time I went with my family and my in-laws, so there were 8 of us in total. We stayed at Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge…I was initially disappointed as the staff member who greeted us was not very friendly or accommodating. However, after a few hours of disappointment…my attitude changed. The food was delicious and our ranger Lazareth or Lazzie as all the other ranges in the park liked to call him…was fantastic!
We had some incredible sighting…I know it is all about being in the right place at the right time but with a good ranger that is makes it a little easier!
I normally hate night drives as we hardly ever see anything but our first night with Lazzie was different – we saw a pack of wild dogs chase something up a tree. We later discovered that, that something was a leopard…boy were we excited! We waited patiently for sometime for the wild dogs to grow tired of barking and patrolling the tree where the leopard was. It seemed like forever but eventually as we moved closer to the tree…the leopard rushed down the tree and into a nearby tree…what a sighting but wow was it quick. I obviously didn’t get any pics as it was pitch dark at this point but I did enjoy the experience.
Other highlights of our trip was the cheetah brothers, white rhino & her baby, the elusive buffalo, ellies, lions and obviously the beautiful wild dogs (in the daylight this time).
It was a trip that we all enjoyed and I will definitely be going back to Madikwe but not in July as the wild dog tend to den then…so keep that in mind as they are worth trying to get a glimpse of!
Here are the pics that I took on the trip :
