SecretEATS – an underground dining experience

Are you looking for something different to do it Joburg? Or do you want to meet new people? Either way, you should seriously consider signing up for a SecretEATS dinner, which is an underground dining experience. Every single secret dinner is different from the previous one, this is something that they guarantee. SecretEATS secure the best venues, hosts and chefs for each secret dinner…guaranteed. The one I attended was held in the Living Artists Emporium in Arts on Main…it was an amazing experience and one I will be repeating.

My experience:

We decided to go as a group of four friends and booked our seats for Friday, 29th August. The only clue we had was to expect Italian food…which was great…we love Italian and pasta!

On the morning of the 29th August, we received an SMS with the venue and time. I couldn’t believe I had to wait the whole day, when I was so excited to go and experience this underground dinner of fantastic Italian cuisine.

Finally the clock ticked to the time we had to leave, we were excited yet nervous as we were not sure what to expect. We were not disappointed! On arrival we were greeted by the host, Jeremy, with delicious Bombay Sapphire Gin cocktails. As we had arranged a ‘take me home’ service through Standard Bank, I had ta few extra cocktails, as they were just so delicious. While drinking our cocktails we snacked on some divine crostini’s that the chef had made. However, the chef was still a secret till we were seated.

After playing a little game, which I don’t want to potentially spoil for any first time SecretEAT diners, so I will give no details away. We went through to the table and chose a seat. The fantastic chef – Tristan Latouf, was introduced and had prepared a scrumptious four-course meal for us. The delicious food was paired with a selection of Radford Dale Wines. It was at this moment that I knew tonight would be amazing and it was!

My favourite dish of the evening was the pork lion that was cooked in milk, sage, bay leaves and lemon peel accompanied by Italian veggies. The pork was so tender and soft and the flavours mouth-watering. And me being the non-wine drinker I am, I really enjoyed the dessert wine – Radford Dale Vine Dried Viognier (would be great in my baked Camembert recipe).

We had such an awesome evening and will definitely be attending another dinner. I will give you one tip, if you are not driving yourself, I suggest you arrange for your pick-up to be at about 23h30 or 24h00. Our ‘take me home’ service arrived at 23h00 and we had only just finished our last course in time. It would have been nice to stick around a little longer to drink and social a little more.

Below is a selection of photos from the evening:
